Walking Tour of St. George’s Cemetery

Join members of the Historical Society and St. George’s Episcopal Church as we walk through the historic St. George’s Cemetery, pointing out notable figures of Newburgh’s past. Discover how these former citizens contributed to a vibrant Newburgh. Refreshments will be provided by the St. George’s Cemetery Committee. Scroll below to reserve your place on tour. There are 21 stories to hear while on this 1/2 mile walking tour. Most of the walk will take place on old carriage ways and will stay clear of uneven ground making it an enjoyable walk for all ages.

Keep History Alive Raffle

PicnicBasket_CemTour_WEBSt. George’s Cemetery Committee will raffle off a picnic basket filled with goods and sell other souvenirs to raise funds for the care of the historic cemetery.

Rural cemeteries were designed with a romantic vision providing a variety of experiences for visitors. It was common for families to picnic in cemeteries “taking long walks in the peaceful setting, thinking about the past and the future, and keeping a little bit of history alive for themselves.”

Directions

From the NY State Thruway, take exit 17 (Newburgh) and take the ramp to go east on the Interstate 84. Take Interstate 84 east to exit 10. At the light, make an immediate right and continue south on Route 9W, known locally as Robinson Avenue. Continue through nine traffic lights. At the tenth light make a left on Washington Street. Follow the street down the hill, through two traffic lights. The north gate of St. George’s Cemetery will be on the right and the Municipal Park Lot on Ann Street is ahead on the left.

From points West, take Interstate 84 east to exit 10. At the light, make an immediate right and continue south on Route 9W, known locally as Robinson Avenue. Continue through nine traffic lights. At the tenth light make a left on Washington Street. Follow the street down the hill, through two traffic lights. The north gate of St. George’s Cemetery will be on the right and the Municipal Park Lot on Ann Street is ahead on the left.

From points East, take Interstate 84 west to Exit 10s (second exit past the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge). Stay to your right off the ramp and follow it until you come to the traffic light at Route 9W (the Alexis Diner is on the left). Make a right on to Route 9W, and continue south. Continue through nine traffic lights. At the tenth light make a left on Washington Street. Follow the street down the hill, through two traffic lights. The north gate of St. George’s Cemetery will be on the right and the Municipal Park Lot on Ann Street is ahead on the left.
