The Newburgh Historical Society

Founded in 1884, the Historical Society of Newburgh Bay and the Highlands, is one of the nations's oldest historical societies.

Housed in one of the most beautiful and historic houses in Newburgh, the Crawford House, the Historical Society has a very active group of members who meet monthly to organize community events, fund raisers, and to help people in the region realize the benefits of it's rich historic and architectural heritage through exhibits, programs, tours and community outreach efforts.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

"As the current president of the Historical Society at this exciting time in Newburgh's on-going evolution, I am so looking forward to the future as visualized recently by city planners Duany and the Leyland Corp., a place of beauty and pleasant living for everyone in the community. At the same time I am deeply concerned about the future of our Historical Society due to the fact that the costs of maintaining our gorgeous home, the 1830 Captain David Crawford Museum are becoming prohibitive for those of us who work to raise funds each year for its maintenance. The house is filled with collections of art, furnishings, books and historical records all of which reflect our heritage. In addition we provide interesting programs, educate children, advocate for preservation of our architectural riches, organize tours, provide answers to inquiries regarding genealogy, house documentation and historical research. But we need your help!! We need your membership dollars, your interest and concern, your legacy donations and your expertise. This year we've been helped by our plumber's discount on a water heater, a paving company which filled a large hole in the driveway, a Boy Scout Troop clearing an overgrown lot, a family honoring one of its members on a "big birthday " by donating window treatments in her name, a vacuum cleaner, an important early sampler from a local family, and as a legacy gift, two huge Chinese vases which had been part of the Delano estate originally. Skills, which you could donate or deliver at cost, are needed to maintain our museum and record-keeping mission. We receive no public money, except for small grants given periodically. We are all volunteers with the exception of our part-time director whose salary is minimal. Throughout the years there have been people who cared enough to help continue the efforts of maintaining Newburgh's historical society. On "our watch" let's get involved, let's care, let's contribute". -Carla Smith Decker
