What better way is there to celebrate the beginning of autumn than to spend A Day in the Terraces? This year, the popular annual event in beautiful Colonial Terraces will be Saturday, September 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., beginning at the corner of Third Street and Fullerton Avenue. This year's event has a focus on the Arts, history, and culture. Participants will include the Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra, Opera Company of The Highlands, Historical Society of Newburgh Bay and the Highlands, Washington's Headquarters State Historic Site, the Downing Park Planning Committee, the Newburgh Arts & Cultural Commission, River Art Walk, Save the Ritz Theatre, and the Newburgh Rowing Club, with more to be added. Colonial Terraces (established 1918-1919) is a planned community located in the west end of the City of Newburgh. A charming neighborhood graced by handsome brick and quaint white shingled homes, it was designed by the housing and community planning pioneer Henry Wright (1878-1936), as one of several defense housing projects he worked on for the federal government during the World War I era. Colonial Terraces was created to provide homes for workers employed at the busy Newburgh shipyards. As always the "Day" kicks off with a community sidewalk sale. There will also be a large group of Artists and Crafters displaying their fine work- everything from watercolors to found-object sculpture will be shown and for sale. Signage and poster-sized photos will display the history of Colonial Terraces, and the origin of its street names, and at 11 a.m., historian and resident Brian Flannery will conduct a guided historical walking tour. Live music will make your stroll through the Terraces even more pleasant, and if you get hungry, you will find an expanded selection of food to purchase.
